I got ambitious today and made cream of broccoli soup myself using the recipe in the red-checked
Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book. No cans anywhere in sight. My only cheat was using bouillon instead of making my own chicken broth. OK, I didn't churn my own butter, either. It tasted sooooo good. The only reason to go with canned cream of whatever soup is convenience (not a small consideration, that).
